Located on the south side of Davenport Road where it meets Bay Street, sits the Jesse Ketchum Park and the 93-year-old school of the same name. The name is after one of Toronto’s early philanthropists. In 1856, Jesse Ketchum, tanner and philanthropist, donated the land to the Village of Yorkville for a public park and as a site for a “Free and Common School.” Indeed, the school that exists today is one that values diversity and encourages giving back to the community.

The school erected in 1856, was replaced in 1920 for the building that you see today.

So, who is this Jesse Ketchum that has both a park and school named after him? Born in 1782, Jesse Ketchum came to the city of York (Toronto) from the United States in 1799. He’s described as a gentle, Christian, public-spirited man, known as the “Children’s Friend.” His public service work included helping establish churches, schools, libraries, and set up trusts to provide prizes for school children as “incentives to diligent studies, correct deportment, and good behaviour.”

Today, the school serves a diverse population of almost 400 students, with 40 different languages spoken at their homes.

Canadian Designer Jane Ip has had tremendous success bringing beautiful handbags and accessories to millions of women. Her designs are always fun, cool and trendy.

She was born in Hong Kong and she received a graduate degree from the Schulich School of Business at York University. Interestingly, the name of her brand, “Jeanne Lottie,” sounds like the words for “true happiness” in Chinese, which is fitting since the philosophy of the brand is “true happiness is true beauty.”

She started her company 27 years ago and today, its goods are distributed among major chains in North America and it has received quite a bit of media attention. The Jeanne Lottie brand is all about superior quality and beautiful, creative designs.

The Jeanne Lottie flagship store, The Pink House, is located in the heart of Yorkville. It is known to carry great handbags and accessories including shoes, jewellery, key chains and more! The bags tend to have female names to go along with them, which make for a great added touch. Pictured above, from left to right, are: the Andrea, Rose, Dion, and Nellie. Prices are quite affordable. The Andrea, for example, sells for $90.

Ip has been recognized not only for her designs, but for her entrepreneurial spirit; she received an Entrepreneur of the Year Award from ACCE and a Woman of Great Esteem Award in New York for her charitable work. In 2002, Ip founded the Pink Bedroom Party, which attracts over 1,000 people to raise money for Breast Cancer Research.

Stop by and see what Jeanne Lottie has in store for you!

Laywine’s has been open since 1987, selling the best in pens, agendas, organizers and paper products. The store prefers the personal and concrete over technological alternatives. You will find good old fashioned pens and stationery. No PDA devices or other gadgets are available here.

When it comes to quality supplies, you’ll surely find it all at Laywine’s. They offer a large range of writing instruments, fountain pen inks, and other pen refills. They also have the best selection of loose leaf organizers by Filofax. They comprehensively stock many brand names; notebook brands include Clairefontaine, Rhodia, Moleskine, Field Notes, Canteo, and more.

The staff at Laywine’s are extremely helpful – especially Peter Laywine (the proprietor), they really know their stuff. They will not rush you or try to sell you something you do not need. They also encourage you to try many of their pens and will do what they can to help you find the item you need.

Laywine’s carries the best brands out there, so they may be slightly pricier than your typical Grand & Toy. For example, fancy fountain pens include the Pelikan 800 which goes for $740 and the Sailor: 1911 pen which sells for $375. These pens can be great investments; they will often last close to a lifetime! Although you cannot buy products online, you can find images and descriptions on their website.

If you love organizational supplies or pens, you’ll surely love Laywine’s.

Lifetime Developments started off as a small partnership between Mel Pearl and Sam Herzog. Over the past three decades, Lifetime has grown significantly. It shifted its focus from working primarily on low rise projects in the GTA to becoming one of Toronto’s biggest high rise condominium developers.

The very first condo project Lifetime worked on was a joint venture with Lanterra Developments, namely, WaterParkCity. Since then, it has gone on to develop popular projects such as The Four Seasons Hotel & Residences, M5V, Victory Condos, Liberty Market Lofts, Lumiere, X2, Bisha, and, of course, The Yorkville Condominiums.

According to Mel Pearl, now the principal at Lifetime, working in the Toronto market was quite a bit different from working in the rest of the GTA. First of all, the environment was a lot more competitive downtown and breaking into the market was challenging. On the other hand, the City of Toronto was more cooperative because it has been very ambitious about having the city developed over the past few years.

Lifetime takes a very specific approach to their projects. They first identify neighbourhoods that are poised to become thriving communities. This strategic planning is part of the reason they have been so successful.

From all his years in business, Mel Pearl says the most important lesson a business can learn is to be financially sound. Lifetime takes great care to not spend beyond its means.

It’s definitely clear that their approach to business works – Lifetime is the recipient of numerous accolades including many 2010-2011 coveted BILD Awards and 2012 The Nationals Awards.

If you’re looking for that perfect condo, check out one of their projects! For more information on any of Lifetime’s projects, please feel free to contact us at (416) 929-1660 or email us at resupport@axoncapitalrealty.com.
